ABOUT OUR FOUNDER

SARKODIE

ORIGINS OF COMPASSION:

The Sarkodie Foundation, founded by the celebrated African rap icon Sarkodie, is more than a philanthropic venture; it is a deeply personal mission. This mission was born from Sarkodie’s own challenging upbringing in Tema and Accra, where he confronted the stark realities of poverty, hunger, and the absence of his biological parents. His formative years in these tough neighbourhoods were marked by the daily struggle to overcome the hurdles that life threw at him.

Sarkodie’s story is one of remarkable resilience and unwavering determination. Despite the adversities he faced, his passion for music became a beacon of hope and a pathway to a world beyond the streets. His relentless pursuit of his dreams saw him rise from the harsh environments of Tema and Accra to achieve global acclaim as a rap icon. His journey, a compelling narrative of triumph over adversity, stands as a testament to what perseverance and talent can achieve against the odds.

This journey from the streets to stardom is at the heart of the Sarkodie Foundation’s mission. Sarkodie’s experiences have profoundly shaped his commitment to give back to communities that mirror his early life. The foundation is an embodiment of his rags-to-riches story, driven by the desire to empower, educate, and uplift underprivileged youth. It seeks to offer children and young men the very opportunities that Sarkodie had to fight for - access to quality education, avenues of creative expression, and the support needed to navigate life’s challenges.

The Solution

Inspired by Sarkodie’s own journey of hustle from the streets of Tema and Accra, overcoming poverty, hunger, and personal loss, our solution initiatives are designed to transform adversity into opportunity, empowering children and the youth to write their won stories of success and resilience.

Brighter Day - An Integrated Child Welfare & Education Program.

Our foundation prioritizes holistic development by integrating health and well-being into our education initiatives. From providing nutritious meals and healthcare access to offering educational resources and support, we ensure that the physical, mental, and academic needs of children are met.

The Sarkodie Creative Arts for Impact Fund

Recognising the transformative power of the arts, we foster economic independence by nurturing creative talents. Our programs provide platforms for artistic expression and linkages to the broader creative economy, enabling youth to explore and monetise their artistic abilities.

The Art of Hustle - An Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Initiative.

We emphasise skill development and entrepreneurial training as key tools for economic upliftment.
Through mentorship, workshops, and hands-on experiences, we prepare young individuals for successful
careers, fostering a spirit of innovation and self-reliance.

This is Tema Festival - A Celebration of Culture & Community

“This Is Tema” , initiated in 2020 to celebrate Tema’s cultural heritage, where Sarkodie’s journey began. This annual festival draws out 30,000+ people and intertwines music, arts, and health awareness, providing a platform for local artists and entrepreneurs to shine.
